Emotional Support Animal Therapy

  • 1 hour
  • Business address and/or telehealth

Service Description

An emotional support animal is not a pet. It is a companion animal that provides therapeutic benefit to an individual with a psychiatric disability. These animals do not have to be professionally trained to perform a particular task but must be trained to behave appropriately in a public setting. Any size or breed of dog or cat can be an emotional support animal. However, please review your airline’s specific rules related to breed, age, weight, etc. before you travel. Emotional support animals are protected under the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA) and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). The FHAA prevents landlords and homeowner associations from restricting your emotional support animal from living with you, even when there is a no-pet policy in place. These associations are also not allowed to assess special pet deposits or fees upon you. Property exemptions include: a building with four or less units (one of which is owner occupied), single-family homes where the owner manages the rental or sale of the property (and owns less than three single-family homes), and organization-owned homes, or private clubs designed for its members. The ACAA protects individuals by allowing an emotional support animal to fly with them in the cabin of an airplane, without having to pay any additional fees. While emotional support animals are often used as part of a mental health treatment plan, they are not considered service animals. Emotional support animals are only allowed access to airplanes and no-pet housing. If you are you Anxious,Depressed,Have Panic Attacks or Fear Flying you may be eligible for an emotional support animal letter to allow your dog or cat access to “no pet” residences and airplanes. Note: Services may be covered by healthcare insurance and/or EAP. We accept Medicaid, Medicare and most major commercial HMO/PPO insurance plans. To verify eligibility and insurance coverage please notify us before scheduling appointment.
